NASA has confirmed that July 2016 was the hottest month on record since records began 136 years ago.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), a branch of the UN, the average temperature in May 2016 was 0.95 degrees Centigrade (approximately two degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the average recorded between 1951 and 1980.
World temperatures have now seen 370 consecutive months above those average temperatures. Based on data from 62 countries, 2015 has been confirmed by the WMO as the hottest year on record.
